Radiation Dry Bias of the Vaisala RS92 Humidity Sensor

چکیده
The comparison of simultaneous humidity measurements by the Vaisala RS92 radiosonde and by the Cryogenic Frostpoint Hygrometer (CFH) launched at Alajuela, Costa Rica, during July 2005 reveals a large solar radiation dry bias of the Vaisala RS92 humidity sensor and a minor temperature-dependent calibration error. For soundings launched at solar zenith angles between 10° and 30°, the average dry bias is on the order of 9% at the surface and increases to 50% at 15 km. A simple pressureand temperature-dependent correction based on the comparison with the CFH can reduce this error to less than 7% at all altitudes up to 15.2 km, which is 700 m below the tropical tropopause. The correction does not depend on relative humidity, but is able to reproduce the relative humidity distribution observed by the CFH.

The paper evaluates two different bias correction schemes for Vaisala RS92 measurements. Given that RS92 sensors are used globally to measure tropospheric humidity, the comparison is valuable. Because of my interest in the topic, I am providing a few comments that may help to improve the paper. However, please note that the comments here should not be considered as editor’s decision but solely ...
متن کاملReference quality upper-air measurements: GRUAN data processing for the Vaisala RS92 radiosonde
The GCOS (Global Climate Observing System) Reference Upper-Air Network (GRUAN) data processing for the Vaisala RS92 radiosonde was developed to meet the criteria for reference measurements. These criteria stipulate the collection of metadata, the use of well-documented correction algorithms, and estimates of the measurement uncertainty. An important and novel aspect of the GRUAN processing is t...

This is not correct. While the RS92 RH sensor does respond much faster than RS80, time-lag error can still be substantial when T < -45C. The sensor time-constant at 45C is about 15 s, and at -70C it is 105 s. At a 5 m/s ascent rate this corresponds to a 63% sensor response on vertical scales of 75 m and 525 m respectively, which is the scale over which humidity features are "smoothed" by slow s...
متن کاملAccuracy assessment and correction of Vaisala RS92 radiosonde water vapor measurements
[1] Relative humidity (RH) measurements from Vaisala RS92 radiosondes are widely used in research and operational applications, but their accuracy is not well characterized as a function of height, RH, and time of day (or solar altitude angle). This study compares RS92 RH measurements to simultaneous water vapor measurements from three reference instruments of known accuracy. Cryogenic frost po...
متن کاملImproved Daytime Column-Integrated Precipitable Water Vapor from Vaisala Radiosonde Humidity Sensors
Accurate water vapor profiles from radiosondes are essential for long-term climate prediction, weather prediction, validation of remote sensing retrievals, and other applications. The Vaisala RS80, RS90, and RS92 radiosondes are among the more commonly deployed radiosondes in the world. However, numerous investigators have shown that the daytime water vapor profiles measured by these instrument...
